Name that bird...

This bird was in our backyard this afternoon. It let me get pretty close to take its picture. I thought it was a quail from afar but then I noticed it didn't have the plumage on its head. It trots like a quail and was eating off the ground like a quail. I have an idea what it might be - any other guesses?
