Name that bird...
This bird was in our backyard this afternoon. It let me get pretty close to take its picture. I thought it was a quail from afar but then I noticed it didn't have the plumage on its head. It trots like a quail and was eating off the ground like a quail. I have an idea what it might be - any other guesses?

Yes, you get the smarty pants award. That's what I thought too. But, the picture in my bird book doesn't have the brown and white stripes on the breast. Actually, I just figured out it must be a juvenile... How did you know?
You guys are hysterical!! I would have guessed a female quail and left if at that but nooooo, you have to use the internet and really figure it out. I love being related to you both!
I have the benefit of many other pictures I took of the backyard bird and I'm pretty sure it's the Chukar also. The Red Legged Partridge isn't in my book either, but that's why we have the internet, right? I still don't know how you (Erin) came up with Chukar in the first place - I flipped through my bird book in the vicinity of the quails until I saw the picture of the Chukar. Anyway, that was fun - I'm glad I bought the bird book.
