Here is a better view of the beak, which is key. I think I've got it now. I was wrong - not the oriole, but another cool bird.

Yes, female black headed grosbeak. Glad we solved that little mystery.
We found out ours was a black headed grosbeak, too, but he was a boy...
Sure is easier with that male plumage!
