Whoooo is among us?

We have been hearing an owl close by at bedtime and sometimes during the night, but it always seemed to be somewhere down in the gulch. Well, last night I was awakened by a loud landing/tapping on the roof. It sounded like the crows when they land on the roof, but BIGGER. And then it started hoo-hoo hooooing! I wanted to go see so bad, but the inertia wouldn't let me. I figured it would fly away too fast also. So anyway, this isn't exactly a "name that bird", but now we can all sit and wonder what KIND of owl it is.... oh, the fun!

I know, you diehards are saying, um hello, where are the pictures of Sofia and Maia? We are having a small equipment malfunction. I can't find the battery charger and we don't have any regular batteries. Anyone seen it?

My slightly educated guess would be a Great Horned Owl, only because it is very large and does have a call similiar to what you described. They are big and do have feathered "horns" making them very distinctive. You"ll know it if you can catch even a peak. Good luck, Love Daddy

Yes, so after reviewing my bird book, it appears that the Great Horned Owl is the most likely candidate. But, based on the call and the location, it could also be the Spotted Owl. Probably not, since they are so rare, but it could be. Imagine that!
